MELAKA: Back in the 1400s, it sailed as far as Rome and China during the heyday of the Malacca Sultanate. Among the consignments it carried were four elephants from then Siam, which were gifted by the Siam King to Malacca.
With a capacity of 500 tonnes and a length of 1,000m, the vessel known as the Mendam Berahi was said to be much larger than the Portuguese galleons.
It will soon be “calling on” the Klebang Maritime Museum – in the form of a replica.
Building a model of the sailboat based on the original design is the latest project of the Melaka Museum Authority (Perzim).
Its manager Datuk Khamis Abas said the construction was expected to take two years with a fund of RM10mil provided by the Tourism and Culture Ministry.
“The size of the replica will be the same as the replica of Portuguese galleon Flor de la Mar at Banda Hilir,” he said yesterday.
Khamis hoped that with the introduction of the Mendam Berahi replica, locals could get an insight into the maritime glory of the sultanate.
The sailboat could carry 1,000 people and had three cannons fixed on its hull.
Khamis added that the maritime museum would also introduce an exhibition to detail how Melaka emerged as one of the important entrepot empires in the region.
Meanwhile, Khamis said the maritime museum attracted 300,000 visitors in the first six month of this year.
Paid visitors to other museums and galleries in the state also increased by 10%, or 15,000 people, for the same period.
In terms of nationwide ranking, Melaka was second with a total of 673,436 visitors last year, he said. “We target a higher figure this year with tours organised for schoolchildren from Singapore,” Khamis said.
Among the efforts to attract more visitors was the setting up of intriguing exhibitions, he said.Khamis added that Perzim also engaged the Chetty and Portuguese community leaders to be part of the living museum programme, which has proven to be a successful endeavour.

Melaka: The recent sighting of three hornbills in the coastal housing estate of Ujong Pasir has bewildered residents here.
The birds, believed to be Oriental pied hornbills, were spotted a week ago by a resident in Taman Aman.
“I spotted the birds roosting on the roof of my terrace house and was quite surprised as they were hornbills,” a resident known as Tan, in her 40s, said at her home near here.
She said the birds later flew off and she thought that was the last she would see of them.
However, on Monday, Tan said the birds were spotted perched on the branches of a Neem tree in front of her home.
“I have never seen hornbills in the wild in Melaka before and wonder how they ended up here,” she added.
Danny Soon, 54, a Klang resident who was visiting his in-laws here, was also surprised to see the birds.
“I have been coming to Ujong Pasir for the last 30 years and this is the first time I have seen hornbills,” he said.
The New Straits Times went to visit the neighbourhood yesterday but the birds were nowhere in sight.
The hornbills were recorded in a 20-second video clip while on the Neem tree in the housing area.
The birds were black and white with large, light-coloured beaks, which fit the description of the Oriental pied hornbills.
This hornbill species can be found in habitats such as broad-leaved evergreen forests, mixed deciduous forests, and island forests.
This species is found in northern India, eastern Nepal, southern China, Myanmar, southern Thailand, Indochina, Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java and Bali.

MELAKA: The implementation of the tourism tax, which comes into
force on July 1, will not affect tourist arrivals to Melaka, Chief Minister
Datuk Seri Idris Haron assured today.
He said the state is still on track to welcoming 16.75 million
tourists by year-end.
Idris also pointed out that the state has had experience with
implementing heritage tax on hotel guests,
which did not adversely affect tourist arrivals.
"When we first implemented the heritage tax,
we expected (fewer tourist arrivals), but (more) tourists are coming here because they are confident that the heritage products here are
well taken care of.
"(Tourists) also have the (right to make a
dispute) if they find that the heritage products
are not being properly taken care of," he said at
the state agencies' monthly assembly, hosted
by Telekom Malaysia Melaka at Seri Negeri here today.
Idris added that most tourists would have
factored in taxes into their holiday expenses,
as they are here to enjoy their holiday instead
of evading tariffs.
"The implementation of the tourism tax will enhance the quality of tourism products and services, and this will favour the tourists as
they will be better assured," he said.
Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri
Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz had said that proceeds from the tourism tax would be used for promoting Malaysia overseas and to refurbish tourism facilities.
The tax rate will be fixed at RM20 per room
per night (five-star), RM10 per room per
night (four-star), RM5 per room per night
(one-, two- and three-star), RM2.50 per room
per night (one, two and three Orchid) and
RM2.50 per room per night (non-rated accommodation premises).
Nazri added that the revenue collected
from the tourism tax nationwide will be channelled back to the states.
